Patching systems without downtime (for Pega Platform version 8.4 and later)

Suggest edit
Updated on June 30, 2022

For releases 8.4 and later, the Pega zero-downtime split-schema patch scripts use a new rules schema and temporary data schema and the patch migration script moves the rules between the appropriate schemas.

Note: Pega does not recommend or support updates for which an application is deployed, on the production environment, to two different versions of Platform Platform that are running on the same database.

For details about the difference between a major upgrade, a minor upgrade, and a patch, see Pega Platform patches.

Use the out-of-place patch process for zero-downtime patches

Complete your patch without downtime using the out-of-place patch process. Patch installation is zero-downtime and includes only rule changes observed between the patch and the current version. Patches are reversible.

While the out-of-place patch process is the recommended method, you might prefer to apply the patch in-place, which applies the patch without using the temporary data schema. In-place patchs involve down time. For details, see, Applying a patch in-place.

  • Applying a patch without downtime

The Pega patch process is zero-downtime for highly available systems when you use the out-of-place process so you can continue working in your application while you patch your system.

  • Applying a patch in-place

Apply a patch in-place on systems that do not require minimal downtime.

  • Post-patch tasks

This section describes additional tasks to perform after the new rules schema and the existing data schema have been updated.
