Custom configuration options for accessibility

Updated on December 13, 2022
Applicable to Theme Cosmos applications

Pega Platform provides an expanding framework for building an accessible user interface. While the accessibility features are designed to cover most use cases out-of-the-box, you can also change their default settings to match your particular business needs.

This approach provides greater flexibility when building an UI, but requires additional maintenance, and might not be optimal for users who rely on assistive technology.

For example: Changing the default PDF file format from PDF/UA to PDFA/1-b improves storage, but generates documents that are not accessible.

What to do next: Discover more about customizing accessible solutions in the following articles:

  • Managing the main content of your application

Define the primary content of your portal to ensure that users who rely on assistive technology can navigate your application with less effort.

  • Setting the navigation menu to permanently expanded

Create a better experience for users of assistive technologies by keeping the main navigation menu permanently expanded.

  • Assigning WAI-ARIA roles to a Dynamic Layout

Make your application more accessible to users with disabilities by adding semantic information about the role of a layout on a page. When you define the role of a layout in your UI, you provide screen reader users with the information that they require to successfully navigate your application.

  • Setting PDF file versions

Align the format of the files in your application with the needs of your business. Use this setting to define what type of PDF files your application generates, and manage the tradeoffs between better accessibility (PDF/UA standard) and stability in long-term storage (PDFA/1-b standard).
