Managing Cassandra as a store for decisioning data

Updated on July 5, 2022

When you operate your application in an on-premises or client-managed cloud environment, you need to install and operate an external Cassandra cluster, and connect it to Pega Platform as the underlying storage system for the Decision Data Store.

In earlier Pega Platform versions, it was possible to configure a Decision Data Store node cluster that used a Cassandra database in embedded mode. Starting in Pega Platform version 8.6, the use of an internal Cassandra database is deprecated. On-premises and client-managed cloud systems that have been updated from earlier versions of Pega Platform can continue to use Cassandra in embedded mode. However, to ensure future compatibility, do not create any new environments using embedded Cassandra.

Note: In Pega Cloud environments, Pega configures and maintains the Cassandra database for you. No action is required.

The following chapter provides guidelines on how to manage, maintain, and run Cassandra nodes as a repository for analytical data. It also provides procedures for optimizing Cassandra operations and lists the tools that you can use to perform such optimizations in Pega Platform and outside.

Information on Pega alerts for Cassandra applies to any type of environment.

  • Cassandra overview

Apache Cassandra is the primary example of a backing technology that underpins the Decision Data Store data set. The following sections provide an overview of the most important Cassandra features in terms of scalability, data distribution, consistency, and architecture.

  • Configuring the Cassandra cluster

Before you connect Pega Platform to a Cassandra cluster to use it as a repository for decision management data, configure the Cassandra cluster to achieve optimal performance and data consistency across the nodes.

  • Monitoring Cassandra cluster health

You can secure the good health of a Cassandra cluster by monitoring the node status in Pega Platform and by running regular repair operations.

  • Pega alerts for Cassandra

Determine the causes of performance issues in your application and learn how to resolve them by analyzing Cassandra-related alert messages in the performance alert log.

  • Troubleshooting Cassandra

Identify the root cause of degraded performance by completing corresponding monitoring activities. Learn about the most commonly encountered Cassandra issues and how to address them.
